Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most extraordinary moments. Capturing those early days in a calm, cozy studio setting is a beautiful way to preserve the sweetness forever.
As a Lehigh Valley newborn photographer, I’ve worked with families for over 16 years, guiding them through a process that feels simple, calm, and completely taken care of. Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your growing family, here are my best tips to help your newborn studio session feel smooth from start to finish.
1. Book Early (but Don’t Stress)
The best time to photograph newborns is within the first 5–14 days after birth. During this window, babies are naturally sleepier and still have those curled, snuggly poses everyone loves.
I recommend booking your session about 6–8 weeks before your due date. Your due date is reserved on my calendar, and I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month to allow flexibility when your baby arrives.
Once you’re booked, you’ll receive a full session guide and questionnaire so everything is planned ahead of time. You don’t need to figure anything out on your own.

2. Feed Baby Before You Leave
A full feeding right before you leave the house makes a big difference. A well-fed baby is much more likely to arrive sleepy and content, which helps us ease right into the session.
That said, there is no pressure if things don’t go exactly as planned. Newborn sessions are designed with plenty of time built in. We pause for feedings, diaper changes, and soothing as needed. Everything is done on baby’s timeline.
3. Dress Baby in Simple, Easy Layers
Skip complicated outfits and choose something easy to remove, like a zip-up sleeper without a onesie underneath.
Once you arrive, most of what we use is already provided. My studio is fully stocked with swaddles, wraps, headbands, hats, and carefully selected pieces that photograph beautifully and keep your baby comfortable.
If you have something special you’d like to include, I’m always happy to incorporate it into your session.

4. Give Yourself Extra Time That Morning
Getting out of the house with a newborn takes longer than expected. Plan to leave earlier than you think you need so you can arrive feeling calm instead of rushed.
I also recommend:
Feeding baby right before leaving
Bringing extra diapers and a pacifier
Packing snacks or food for yourself
You’re welcome to relax, eat, and get comfortable in the studio. Many parents even choose to wear something cozy and change right before their portion of the session.

5. Consider a Separate Sibling/Family Session
Newborn sessions can last up to three hours to allow time for soothing, feeding, and posing safely.
For families with young children, I offer the option to schedule sibling/family photos on a separate day. This allows for:
A quiet, calm environment for your newborn
A shorter, more focused experience for siblings
Less stress for everyone involved
It’s a simple adjustment that can make a big difference in how relaxed the session feels.

6. Trust the Process (and Work on “Baby Time”)
This is one of the most important things to understand: newborn sessions are never rushed.
I always say we are working on baby time.
Some babies fall asleep easily. Others need extra soothing. Occasionally, a baby may stay awake but calm. In those moments, I adjust and capture beautiful awake images or begin with swaddled setups.
Every session is baby-led, with safety and comfort as the top priority. I am constantly reading your baby’s cues and adjusting in real time.
There have even been rare occasions where a baby was uncomfortable due to a belly ache and couldn’t settle. In those cases, I offer a reschedule because your experience should feel positive and stress-free.
7. What Happens When You Arrive
When you walk into my studio, my goal is simple: help you feel completely at ease.
I’ll greet you, congratulate you, and walk you through the space so you know exactly where everything is. The studio is warmed ahead of time to keep your baby cozy.
You’ll settle into a comfortable seating area where you can relax and watch the session unfold. I’ll go over the setups I’ve prepared based on your questionnaire and any preferences you shared.
From there, I take the lead so you don’t have to think about anything.

8. The Details Matter More Than You Think
During your session, I’m paying close attention to the little things that make a big difference in your final images.
I’m looking at:
Baby’s comfort and positioning
Relaxed facial expressions
Tiny details like fingers, hands, and head placement
While I have a plan going into each session, everything is flexible. Your baby leads the way, and I adjust to create images that feel natural, safe, and beautifully refined.

9. A Smooth Experience Doesn’t End at the Session
About two weeks after your session, you’ll receive a password-protected online gallery of your images.
Each photo has already gone through multiple rounds of editing, and final selections are carefully refined before delivery.
From there, you can:
Select your favorite images included in your package
Upgrade to additional images or the full gallery
Order professional prints and products
I’m always available to help you choose artwork that fits your home so your images don’t just live on your hard drive.
Final Thought: Relax. I’ve Got You.
If there’s one thing I want every parent to know before their newborn session, it’s this:
Relax. I’ve got you.
You bring your baby, milk, and a pacifier if they take one and I’ll take care of the rest.
My goal is the same as yours. I want to capture beautiful images of your baby in a way that feels safe, calm, and enjoyable. I want you to sit back, take it all in, and leave feeling confident that you and your baby were in good hands every step of the way.
Because this stage doesn’t last long and you deserve to remember it in the best way possible.
If you’re looking for an experienced Lehigh Valley newborn photographer who will guide you through every step and create a calm, stress-free experience, I’d love to work with you.
