Six Reasons to Book an Extended Family Session with a Lehigh Valley Photographer

When was the last time your entire family was in one photo on purpose, not quickly taken on a phone between dinner and dessert?
As a Lehigh Valley Family Photographer, I’ve found that extended family sessions are some of the most meaningful sessions I photograph. They bring generations together, capture relationships that are often missed, and create images that only grow in value over time.
Here are six meaningful reasons to make it happen.

1. It Brings Everyone Together for a Moment That Matters
Most families book extended sessions when everyone is already together, typically for a milestone birthday for a grandparent or great grandparent, or during a holiday or family reunion.
These gatherings do not happen often, which is exactly why they are worth documenting. That said, it does not have to be a big event. If your family is together, that is reason enough.

2. It Captures the Relationships You Don’t Usually Photograph
This is your opportunity to capture photos with your parents, your children with their grandparents, and those in-between relationships like aunts, uncles, and cousins.
These combinations are rarely photographed professionally, yet they are often the images that mean the most years down the road. Your children will cherish these connections as they grow.

3. It Is Far More Organized and Efficient Than You Expect
Most clients come in expecting chaos. They worry about large groups, young kids, and how everything will come together.
In reality, the session is structured to run smoothly. I start with the full family, then move into grandparents with grandchildren, followed by individual families, siblings, and any additional groupings that matter most. I keep the session moving while prioritizing younger kids first and being mindful of grandparents or great grandparents who may need a more comfortable pace.
Clients are consistently surprised at how easy and efficient the experience feels.

4. The Planning Process Takes the Stress Off Your Plate
A smooth session starts before anyone arrives.
I recommend setting aside two dates so there is already a backup plan in place for weather or illness. This alone removes a lot of pressure.
I also provide a wardrobe and style guide along with examples from past sessions, and I am always available to offer suggestions or hop on a quick phone call to help coordinate outfits. Having that guidance makes a big difference when you are organizing multiple families.

5. You Will Never Regret Taking the Photos
There are always reasons to put this off. Waiting to lose a few pounds, waiting for kids to get older, waiting for schedules to align, or waiting for life to slow down.
The truth is, those reasons never fully go away.
What I tell my clients is simple. Take the photo now. You will never regret the images you capture, only the ones you do not. Time does not slow down, and these moments are worth preserving while you have them.

6. These Photos Become Family Heirlooms
After the session, families often tell me how surprised they are by how much we captured and how smoothly everything flowed. More importantly, they are genuinely happy they made the decision to do it.
Because these are not just photos for today.
They become part of your family’s story. They are the images your children and grandchildren will look back on. They become heirlooms.
