Why I Love Offering Summer Beach Sessions at Spring Lake Beach, NJ | New Jersey Beach Sessions

Updated: 2 days ago

One question I get asked often is: Do you offer beach sessions in New Jersey?

The answer is yes!

I offer New Jersey beach sessions at Spring Lake Beach in New Jersey, and it has become one of my favorite locations for families, maternity sessions, seniors, couples, and extended family portraits. If you've been dreaming of soft sunset colors, beautiful ocean views, and a relaxed summer feel, a beach session may be exactly what you're looking for.

As a Lehigh Valley photographer, I travel with many Pennsylvania and New Jersey families for New Jersey beach sessions at Spring Lake Beach. Many of my Lehigh Valley families love making a summer evening of it and turning their portrait session into a beach experience.

After photographing there over the years, I've found a location and process that consistently creates beautiful images and a smooth experience.

Why I Chose Spring Lake Beach

Not all beaches photograph the same.

Spring Lake has become my favorite location because it offers so much variety without the overwhelming crowds that many shore locations can bring.

On weekday evenings, the boardwalk is typically quiet and gives us plenty of room for family walking photos. Across the street are beautiful beach homes and dunes that create additional variety before we even step onto the sand. The beach itself is clean, and one of my favorite features is the rock barriers along the surf that add visual interest and texture to photos.

The result is a session that feels peaceful and relaxed rather than busy and crowded.

There is also an option to begin your session a few blocks away at Spring Lake itself. The lake area offers an entirely different look with a gorgeous walking bridge and beautiful scenery that adds even more variety to your gallery before heading over to the beach. It can be the perfect way to add another backdrop and create an even larger variety of images during your session.

What Types of Sessions Work Best at the Beach?

New Jersey beach sessions are perfect for:

• Family sessions

• Extended family sessions

• Maternity portraits

• Senior sessions

• Couples portraits

The beach naturally creates a slower, more relaxed mood that photographs beautifully.

Why Beach Sessions Start Later Than You Might Expect

Beach sessions are scheduled approximately one hour before sunset because the prettiest light of the day happens right before the sun disappears.

During summer, that means sessions happen later in the evening.

Parents sometimes worry about young children and bedtime, but if you're driving from Pennsylvania, the car ride can actually become the perfect pre-session nap.

The later timing is worth it. Those soft sunset tones create the beautiful summery color palette people often imagine when they picture beach portraits.

What Does a Typical Beach Session Look Like?

I like clients to know exactly what to expect.

We usually begin on the boardwalk with walking photos together, a few camera-aware posed portraits, and images with the dunes in the background.

Next we head onto the beach for standing and seated images with the boardwalk behind you.

As the light softens closer to sunset, we move down near the water for photos along the surf with the ocean and sky behind you.

While I love connection and natural moments, I am also a traditional photographer. I always make sure to capture camera-aware portraits first before moving into more candid interaction.

Because the sound of the ocean can make communication harder, I keep sessions very guided. At each location we start with posed portraits and then move into prompts and connection photos.

That might include:

• Walking together

• Loving on your family

• Playing with your children

• Hugging

• Simple movement prompts

I always guide you so you're never left wondering what to do.

What Should You Wear for a Beach Session?

I always recommend soft colors for beach sessions.

Think about sunset colors for inspiration: soft blues, creams, blush tones, dusty colors, and light neutrals photograph beautifully.

For moms, I love long flowy dresses because they create movement and work beautifully with the ocean breeze.

For girls, dresses are also a great option. Longer styles help avoid constantly adjusting for wind.

Hairstyles are important too. Keep beach breezes in mind when planning.

For dads and boys, shorts paired with polos or button-down shirts photograph wonderfully.

And as always, coordinate instead of match. Coordinating colors create much more visual interest.

Questions Families Usually Ask

Is parking difficult?

There is free street parking right where we meet and in my experience it has never been an issue.

What if we're driving from Pennsylvania?

I recommend arriving early and building in extra travel time just in case of shore traffic.

What if my kids don't cooperate?

Kids usually do best when they know this is meant to be fun.

If you have fun, they will too. They feed off of the energy around them. Let go of perfection. They might get sandy and a bit wet, but the smiles are what matters most!

And for extra motivation, there is a great ice cream shop only a couple blocks away that makes the perfect after-session reward.

A Few Things Experience Has Taught Me

One year I had a beach session scheduled on an extremely cloudy day. The family couldn't reschedule, so instead we shifted our session earlier and decided to go for it.

It ended up creating some of the most beautiful light and gorgeous photos.

Beach weather can surprise you.

Another memorable session involved a sunrise silhouette image. We started around 5:45 in the morning, and a one-year-old little boy was awake and a bit cranky at first.

He may have been crying during part of the image creation process, but we still created a beautiful silhouette photo lifting him in the air. Shortly afterward, once he woke up more and started enjoying the beach, everything turned around.

Parent lesson: sometimes sessions don't need to start perfectly to end perfectly.

Beach Session Package Information

Because New Jersey beach sessions require extra travel and additional time built into the experience, I offer a special beach session package designed specifically for New Jersey beach portraits.

This allows us plenty of time for travel, flexibility, and creating a relaxed experience so we never feel rushed while capturing your family along the shoreline.

Why Choose a New Jersey Beach Session?

There is just something about the beach.

The ocean naturally creates a relaxed atmosphere that changes the feel of a session. Families tend to slow down. Kids play. Everyone breathes a little easier.

Visually, the beach creates a clean backdrop where the focus stays on your family and your connection.

The ocean, sky, and soft sunset colors create a timeless summer feel that is hard to recreate anywhere else.

If you've been considering New Jersey beach sessions for your family, I would love to help you plan one.

Let's capture your family with beautiful sunsets, ocean breezes, and memories that feel like summer.
